Developing Ideas

So far me and my group have discussed options for our music video. We have made a thought shower to show what we have discussed. This includes subjects such as genres, artists related to those genres and songs. Through our planning we know we want to use a song that really tells a story, so we can create that story through film.

Research

Me and my group have been watching alot of music videos, both professional and amateur to help to give us an idea on what road we want to go down with our music video. We thought it would be a good idea to watch some amateur videos from other sixth form students so we could get a realistic idea on what we'd be able to create.
Listed below are some professional videos we watched:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DLo54YDNek - "If You Got the Money" - Jamie. T

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N64QMKEbJQg - "Fluorescent Adolescent" - Arctic Monkeys

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA15L6cHPvQ - When the Sun Goes Down - Arctic Monkeys

The three above videos are of an indie/alternative genre. This genre of music often has music videos which are very socially realistic and gritty approach to them. There is usually an easy to follow story to them. Also the videos have a really simple look to them, they have minimal props and simple real locations.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wws7mnMewPw - "Psychosocial Heavy" - Slipknot

This genre of music is heavy metal. The videos for this genre tends to be alot of the bad performing the song in various locations, also the feel of the video is generally quite dark .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M11SvDtPBhA - "Party in the USA" - Miley Cyrus

This video is Pop/R'n'B. These videos are all quite glamorous and look expensive, often shots are done in studios and sound stages. Alot of these videos are set in clubs and parties. They all look very glossy and feature alot of extras so alot of people would be needed to create a video of this genre.

We will take all of the above into consideration when deciding on our song to create a music video for, thinking about what will be realistically possible for us to create with equipment and such that we have.

A2 Coursework!

So, we have been given our A2 Project! My group (myself, Leone Tracey & Tana Haye) and I are extremely excited about creating a music video, we think it will be a very good learning experience for us. After talks with each other about what we wanted to do we started to do some research in what songs we could use. We discussed genres, and artists of that genre. We then began to narrow it down to genres of music we actually liked as we thought it best to stick to something we liked because of fans of that genre, we know what sort of look and feel is expected.

We are looking for a song that:
  • would be easy to lip sync to
  • is easy to develop a storyline to
  • wont need an extravagant video
  • is modern but fairly old so we are not tempted to copy the original video
  • doesn't already have a video that is iconic, such as "Thriller" by Michael Jackson for example.
As instructed through the brief we have chosen 2 out of the 3 options to complete our promotional package. We have chosen a magazine advert and front cover. This is because we feel this will be easier to do individually yet still keep a consistent look to.

Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album to include a music promo video together with two of the following three options:
A website homepage for the band.
A cover.
A magazine advert.

2. Summary of planning process so far including thought shower.

3. At least ONE piece of research.

Underage drinking research.

We have been asked to do some research about underage drinking. I enjoyed this research as it was very shocking. As a young adult mself ive always known that it exists, however i found it very interesting and didnt relaise just how much of a problem it is amongst youths.

Here is what i found:

How do they get it?
10% of 12-15 yr-old drinkers say they buy their own alcohol.
63% of 16-17 yr-olds have bought their own booze in pubs, nightclubs and bars.

What do they drink?
Beer and lager are the most popular drinks among under 18s, with spirits, wine and alcopops also popular.

Where do they do it?
54% of 11-12 year olds said they drank at home or at someone else's home.
33% of 15 yr-olds drank alcohol in a pub or bar and 26% of 14-yr-olds said they drank at parties with friends.

How much do they drink?
The mean alcohol consumption over the past week of boys aged 11-13 has shot up from 3.6 units in 1992 to 8.6 units in 2006. Girls in same age group now drink a mean of 7.9 units in a week, up from 3.1 in 1992. For boys aged 15 that figure rises to 13.1 units a week, and 10.5 units a week for girls.

Why worry?
A survey of underage binge drinkers aged between 14-17 asked the teenagers what problems their binge drinking had led to. Answers included unsafe sex, injury, drug taking, involvement in dangerous driving and problems with the police.

How much of a problem is it?
A majority of head teachers surveyed in 2004 by the BBC Six-o'clock news believed that alcohol was a bigger problem than drug abuse in their schools.

PSA-Rape Awareness

In class we got into groups to put a storyboard together for a Public Service Announcement on Rape Awareness. When putting the storyboard together we realised that many things are important in this proess such as the length of the shot. We thought we'd give a rough time but realised it is important to give an exact time. Also it is a good idea to make a storyboard because otherwise your making it up as you go along. It is important to write on the storyboard what shot you are going to use, and who is going to be in it so when it comes to filming you know exactly what you are doing. When filming we realised that the ideas from the stroyboard may change in the actual filming process as ideas that seemed good might not work when filming.
I enjoyed the editing process. This was a chance to get creative with the piece of film you have and really improve it just by uising a few effects. For example at one point our actor was laughing and it could be clearly heard on film, this did not go with the film as it was about rape and the victim wouldnt exactly be laughing, however we managed to keep the shot but silence it, as the shot wasnt close up of the actor you couldnt see her laughing so by silencing it we managed to keep the shot.
I enjoyed this piece of work, i learnt alot from it such as how to use iMovie well which wa useful as when it comes to my coursework i wont be such a novice with it.
